The VP / SVP of Commercial Development is a full-time/exempt position.

Job Purpose/Duties

The VP / SVP of Commercial Development reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for developing the executive-level corporate commercial  growth and development strategies through mergers, acquisitions, new joint ventures, pursuing commercial opportunities, establishing commercial growth strategies for existing federal contracts, and forging new business partnerships/relationships. 

All activities of this position focus on creating shareholder value and long-term sustainable profitability of an Alaska Native Corporation (ANC) which owns and operates multiple Small Business Administration (SBA) 8(a) and small disadvantaged business subsidiaries. This individual has the responsibility and authority to carry out assigned tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Identify priority industries, customers, markets, capabilities, and geographic opportunities where the corporation can compete successfully and achieve sustainable margins outside the Federal Government sector.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage existing federal past performance, technical capabilities, customer relationships, and operational infrastructure in adjacent commercial markets.
  • Establish realistic revenue, bookings, profitability, and win-rate targets supported by disciplined pipeline management and investment decisions.
  • Evaluate opportunities based on strategic alignment, revenue potential, required investment, execution risk, and anticipated return.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs to evaluate the effectiveness of growth strategies.
  • Identify and develop new commercial revenue streams that complement the corporation’s federal business, subsidiary capabilities, assets, and strategic priorities.
  • Work with subsidiary leaders to identify capabilities that can be expanded, packaged, or adapted for commercial customers.
  • Lead market research, customer discovery, competitive analysis, and commercial feasibility assessments.
  • Develop relationships with prospective customers, industry partners, investors, economic development organizations, and other market stakeholders.
  • Personally lead the corporation’s highest-priority commercial pursuits from initial concept through negotiation, launch, and revenue generation.
  • Oversee and manage budgets related to department and applicable projects.
  • Determine when the corporation should pursue an opportunity through an existing subsidiary, establish a new business line, form a partnership, acquire a business, or decline the opportunity and make recommendations to the CEO (Leadership Team).
  • Engage subsidiaries and prospective partners and determining how relationships can support multiple areas of the enterprise.
  • Negotiate commercial agreements that clearly define investment, ownership, risk, revenue sharing, workshare, performance expectations, and decision-making authority.
  • Build relationships with financial partners, industry leaders, and other organizations that strengthen the corporation’s commercial position.
  • Ensure partnerships remain aligned with the corporation’s values, risk tolerance, subsidiary interests, and long-term goals.
  • Lead the corporation’s merger and acquisition strategy in alignment with its long-term growth and revenue-diversification goals.
  • Collaborate with subsidiary and federal business leaders to identify capability, customer, geographic, and market gaps that could be addressed through acquisition.
  • Identify and evaluate acquisition targets that complement existing business lines and provide new customers, capabilities, contracts, geographic reach, management talent, or access to commercial markets.
  • Develop the strategic rationale and business case for potential transactions, including anticipated synergies across subsidiaries and federal and commercial business lines.
  • Coordinate valuation, due diligence, deal structuring, negotiation, and executive and Board decision-making with internal and external advisors.
  • Evaluate asset purchases, equity acquisitions, joint ventures, and other transaction structures to determine the best approach for the corporation.
  • Lead post-close integration planning in partnership with the affected subsidiaries and corporate functions.
  • Establish and monitor performance measures to determine whether completed transactions achieve their intended financial, operational, and strategic results.
  • Work with CEO, VP of Finance, VP and Legal Counsel and other managers to develop and maintain SOPs.
  • Travel when necessary and fully utilize virtual teaming toolsets to execute the company growth and development strategies.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics or other related field from an accredited institution, advanced degree preferred; or 10 years of strategic growth and development experience – required
  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience in corporate strategy, business growth, federal contracting, corporate development, or operations.
  • Five or more years in a senior leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success translating strategy into measurable revenue growth, profitability, or diversification.
  • Demonstrated experience in commercial business development and successful mergers and acquisitions, including opportunity evaluation, due diligence, transaction support, and integration.
  • Experience evaluating new markets, business lines, partnerships, investments, or acquisitions.
  • Strong financial and business acumen, including business-case development, forecasting, margins, risk, and return on investment.
  • Ability to influence and coordinate leaders across multiple subsidiaries or business units.
  • Proven ability to use technology and innovation to benefit from data analytics, customer relationship management systems, or business intelligence tools to evaluate opportunities, manage growth initiatives, monitor performance, and support executive decision-making.
  • Understanding of federal contracting, including contract vehicles, teaming, and joint ventures.
  • Experience with Alaska Native Corporations – preferred.

  • Ability to work with Managers, Vice Presidents, CEO, Board, and other employees in a professional, respectful and collaborative manner – required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a “Secret” or “Top Secret” clearance – required.
  • Compliance with company drug testing policy – required.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills – required.
  • Ability to analyze data, prepare proposals, budgets and financial models, charts, graphs, reports, etc. – required.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of computer hardware, software and other applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Teams, etc. – required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and Word – preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • This position operates in an office environment. Standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, phones, etc. will be routinely utilized.
  • This position is generally sedentary; however, there will be some filing and other organization involved in some daily tasks, which will require lifting, bending, standing, etc. in order to maneuver.
  • This position requires frequent travel.

Preference Statement

Preference will be given to shareholders of Alaska Native Corporations in accordance with federal law and the corporation’s policy.

Salary

Salary is commensurate on experience. 

*Position may be filled at Senior VP or VP depending on education and experience.
