What can you expect?

As the Tower Technician II, you will work onsite in Alaska, US and will perform advanced telecommunications tower construction, microwave installation, and general construction activities to support new site builds, system upgrades, maintenance, and repair projects throughout Alaska. Working under the direction of the Project Foreman and Project Manager, this position independently performs tower erection, microwave antenna installation and alignment, grounding, weatherproofing, rigging, testing, and related civil construction activities while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards. You will serve as an experienced member of the construction crew by assisting with technical work, mentoring less experienced team members, and helping ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications. This position performs physically demanding work at heights of up to 300 feet in remote and often extreme Alaskan environments and requires extensive travel, flexibility, and a commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous professional development.

 

How will you do it?

  • Perform trade for long hours, day after day, often in adverse conditions, to complete the project at hand.
  • Follow directives from Project Foreman and anyone senior, with the sense of duty to take initiative and always remain productive at work while on the jobsite.
  • Climb telecommunications towers up to 300 feet and perform work safely at elevated heights in remote and extreme Alaskan environments.
  • Perform general construction activities including site layout, excavation, foundation work, tower erection, equipment installation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Install, align, cross-polarize, ground, weatherproof, test, maintain, and repair microwave antennas, telecommunications equipment, towers, and associated components.
  • Install, terminate, and test a variety of telecommunications cables, connectors, antennas, and related components.
  • Read, interpret, and perform work in accordance with construction drawings, engineering plans, specifications, and manufacturer installation requirements.
  • Perform tower rigging activities and provide crane signaling support during equipment installation and tower construction activities.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications equipment, microwave systems, and tower infrastructure.
  • Perform physically demanding work requiring the use of arms, legs, and full-body movement, including climbing communication towers, balancing, lifting, carrying, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and handling tools, equipment, and materials in a construction or telecommunications environment.
  • Collaborate with multiple trades and apply a broad construction skill set to support overall project objectives.
  • Conduct quality control inspections of completed work to verify compliance with project specifications, company standards, and applicable industry requirements
  • Submittal of all necessary paperwork to Project Management and Accounting in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to and perform duties pursuant to the company-wide safety plan.
  • Responsibility to report any incident, situation, or activity that may affect the company’s ability to operate safely, ethically, and profitably to the company Risk Manager.
  • Inspect, maintain, and properly use climbing, rigging, fall protection, and specialized telecommunications equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Maintain professionalism, consistent attendance, required certifications, and a collaborative team-oriented approach while representing the Company in the field.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Tower Technician I employees and other less experienced crew members while promoting safe work practices and quality workmanship.
  • Cooking and cleaning as necessary in the field quarters.
  • Maintain any required certifications mandatory by law or company policy.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Functions:  

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • All-around knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in the construction field.
  • Extensive knowledge of climbing gear, rigging, and tower safety.
  • Proficiency using hand and power tools, rigging equipment, rope systems, and knot-tying techniques required for telecommunications tower construction.
  • Ability to safely utilize electronic test equipment and other specialized tools in performance of duties.
  • Ability to safely use harnesses, belts, ropes, and any other required protective equipment gear required to meet all duties of position.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications installation practices, microwave systems, and industry standards.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines, and general time management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), have a high degree of attention to detail, follow work rules, and adhere to the project schedule.
  • Proficiency using computers, tablets, and mobile technology to complete project documentation, reports, and electronic communication.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure.
  • Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve routine installation and equipment issues while escalating complex issues as appropriate.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and quality while ensuring compliance with project specifications and company standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and participate in meetings with supervisors, coworkers, subcontractors, and customers to coordinate work activities, share information, and resolve field issues.
  • Ability to mentor and provide guidance to less experienced employees while promoting safe work practices and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to recognize hazards, exercise sound judgment, and make safe decisions in changing jobsite conditions.
  • Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale.
  • Ability to travel to remote places for work related purposes (up to 100% of time).
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule.

 

Who is STG Inc. looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Five (5) years or more of experience in the construction field, with at least three (3) years of experience in tower erection in rural arctic environments required.
  • Experience working with microwave antenna systems, including waveguide sweeping, required.
  • Tower Safety and Rescue Certification required within 3 months of hire
  • Rigging certification required within 6 months of hire
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred; ability to obtain certification upon hire required.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving (if applicable), and background screening.

 

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. STG operates in a fast-paced, project-driven environment where work is performed primarily at remote construction sites throughout Alaska. This position requires frequent travel to project locations and may involve transportation by aircraft, helicopter, boat, barge, ATV, snow machine, or other specialized equipment depending on project requirements and accessibility.

 

Employees regularly work outdoors in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, freezing temperatures, and uneven terrain. Tower Technicians perform work at elevated heights, including climbing telecommunications towers up to 300 feet while utilizing required fall protection equipment. Work may involve exposure to construction hazards, heavy equipment, energized systems, noise, dust, and other jobsite conditions while following all Company safety policies and industry safety standards.

 

Employees may be required to work extended shifts, rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to meet project schedules and operational demands. Depending on project location, employees may stay in shared field housing or temporary camp accommodations for extended periods and are expected to maintain a professional, respectful, and collaborative environment while deployed.
