JOB SUMMARY:
The Service Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the rental and services of equipment, including pad, shop, and field. The Service Manager will assist the Operations Manager with personnel management such as delegation of tasks, tracking mechanical performance, creating work schedules, reviewing timecards and assisting with disciplinary issues. The Service Manager will ensure all policies and procedures are followed. This position will provide excellent leadership and supervisory skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Lead and coordinate mechanics, service technicians, parts personnel, and laborers to maintain the quality and readiness of the rental fleet.
- Develop and manage quality assurance programs to ensure equipment is consistently safe and reliable for customers.
- Establish and oversee comprehensive safety programs, conduct daily toolbox talks, and provide ongoing training to all employees.
- Collaborate with parts personnel to manage inventory of service items and replacement parts efficiently.
- Schedule and prioritize repairs and maintenance across shop, field, and wash bay operations.
- Mentor and train mechanics and technicians on best practices for operating in Arctic conditions.
- Partner with the Operations Manager to develop, implement, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assist with overseeing equipment lifecycle management, including procurement, maintenance schedules, and decommissioning.
- Track utilization rates and recommend fleet expansion or reduction based on operational needs.
- Ensure all operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations (including OSHA, DOT, and environmental regulations).
- Ensure all personnel certifications and training records are current and documented.
- Lead response to equipment breakdowns or critical failures in the field, minimizing downtime.
- Assist with establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) for fleet uptime, service turnaround time, and repair quality.
- Provide regular reporting to management on department performance and improvement opportunities.
- Deliver excellent customer service for rental and repair operations, engaging directly with customers and end-users.
- Assist with negotiating service agreements and ensure compliance with contract terms.
- Interface with equipment suppliers and manufacturers to address operational challenges specific to Arctic environments.
- Maintain comprehensive service and repair records, including safety inspections and compliance documentation.
- Promote a positive team culture, encourage professional development, and recognize high performance.
- Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact of operations.
- Ensure proper handling of fuels, lubricants, and other materials in compliance with environmental policies.
- Work a rotational schedule 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as directed.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:
This position has shared supervisory responsibilities over the crew with the Operations Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of heavy construction and rental equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance instructions.
- Ability to learn and explain technical product features and procedures to both team members and customers.
- Good working knowledge of business software applications currently used by the Company, with the ability to quickly learn new systems.
- Familiarity with Arctic or extreme weather operations, including best practices for equipment and personnel safety.
- Demonstrated strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to oversee multiple priorities and schedules simultaneously.
- Ability to deliver services effectively within department budget and resource constraints.
- Ability to mentor, develop, and supervise a diverse team of mechanics, service technicians, and support staff.
- Exceptional time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Ability to implement and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with customers, vendors, and employees at all levels.
- Ability to actively listen, respond to customer needs, and provide high-quality service solutions.
- Ability to exercise resourcefulness and problem-solving when assisting customers and field teams.
- Ability to manage customer expectations and resolve service-related conflicts professionally.
- Excellent analytical and technical skills, with the ability to assess complex situations and apply practical solutions.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
- Ability to analyze equipment performance data to identify trends, make recommendations, and improve operational efficiency.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as required by operational demands.
- Strong ethical standards in conducting business with customers, vendors, and co-workers.
- Ability to maintain attention to detail, superior organizational skills, and thorough record-keeping.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to work in a Native Corporation multi-business environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree or technical certification in heavy equipment, diesel mechanics, or related field preferred.
- 5 years of proven experience in mechanical, hydraulic, structural, and electrical repair; construction or heavy equipment or related industry required.
- 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience in the construction, gas and oil, or heavy equipment rental industry required.
- Current North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) certification preferred or ability to obtain upon hire.
- Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company’s Driving Policy.
- Ability to pass drug, driving, and background screening.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Exposure to extreme Arctic weather conditions, including subzero temperatures, high winds, snow, ice, and limited daylight during winter months. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud due to the running of various machines. Much of the work will be conducted indoors or outdoors. Occasional extended hours, on-call responsibilities, and flexible scheduling may be required to meet operational needs. The position itself requires the ability to work a rotating schedule on the North Slope, two weeks on and two weeks off.
