Cook Inlet Region, Inc is seeking a Manager, Shareholder and Descendant Communications to join our Corporate Communications team. This position is based in Anchorage, AK.

CIRI's offices are conveniently located in mid-town Anchorage at the Fireweed Business Center, a modern building that represents CIRI’s cultural diversity, respect for the land, and sustainability. Cook Inlet Region, Inc., also known as CIRI, is one of 12 land-based Alaska Native regional corporations created pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). CIRI’s regional boundaries roughly follow the traditional Dena’ina territory of Southcentral Alaska. CIRI was incorporated on June 8, 1972, and is owned today by a diverse group of more than 9,500 Shareholders who live in Alaska and throughout the world.

General Function

The Manager, Shareholder and Descendant Communications is a key member of the Communications team responsible for developing content and strategies that inform, engage, and inspire Shareholders and Descendants. This manager-level position leads the creation of culturally relevant multimedia content across platforms, ensuring alignment with corporate messaging and mission. The role requires strategic thinking, creativity and a deep understanding of Alaska Native heritage and values.

 

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  1. Represent the Communications Department at Shareholder events and cultural gatherings; capture on-site content.
  2. Coordinate with event planners and community liaisons to ensure appropriate access, representation and coverage at CIRI and external events.
  3. Manage real-time coverage or post-event recaps via social media and digital communications. Develop and catalog culturally respectful and resonant content for Shareholder and Descendant-facing platforms such as short-form and long-form storytelling content; social spotlights, interviews and testimonials.
  4. Write and collaborate on clear, engaging content for newsletters, social media posts, website articles, video scripts and internal reports.
  5. Collaborative promotion of Shareholder and Descendant programs and their impact for all life stages.
  6. Monitor social media engagement; coordinate responses to comments and messages timely and appropriately; escalate concerning comments and messages when necessary.
  7. Monitor content performance and engagement analytics; make data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  8. Stay current on social media trends and best practices, especially in Indigenous and community-centered communications.
  9. Collaborate with vendors and in-house creative assets to ensure high-quality content.
  10. Work closely with the Creative Traffic Manager and Corporate Communications Manager to ensure compliance with project schedules and objectives.
  11. Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Shareholder and Descendant Programs, Shareholder Relations, Government Affairs) to surface meaningful stories and share program impacts.
  12. Ensure all content reflects CIRI values, tone and commitment to Alaska Native heritage and identity.
  13. Help amplify Shareholder and Descendant voices and maintain cultural sensitivity and authenticity in storytelling.
  14. Performs other duties as appropriate and as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Understand CIRI’s mission, values and strategic focus areas and incorporate knowledge into daily activities.
  • Proficient in advanced writing, editing and conducting interviews to produce compelling, high-quality content.
  • Intermediate project management skills; ability to successfully pass through the phases of the project management life cycle: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and completion.
  • Proficient use of social media management platforms and analytical tools.
  • Advanced knowledge working with photo and video capture/editing tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, affiliated-company employees as well as outside business associates; exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others.
  • Superior organizational, follow-up, and detail-oriented skills.
  • Work independently, as well as on a team and with minimal supervision.
  • Make decisions, solve problems and exercise excellent judgment.
  • Work well under pressure and independently prioritize workload, while working on multiple projects.
  • Ability to research, organize and analyze technical information with particular attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; including thorough knowledge of proper grammar, advanced vocabulary, spelling, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and industry-standard computer software and databases.
  • Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures and communities.

Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient fine motor skills for use of computers, calculators with an ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods of time.
  • Visual and communication ability adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to kneel, bend and twist at the waist on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to reach below shoulder height with regular frequency (desk position) and at or above shoulder height on occasion.
  • Ability to push, pull, carry, and lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds on a regular basis, and greater weights on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and travel by vehicle or aircraft.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Professional certification or Associate’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field; Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Five years experience in content creation, journalism, digital storytelling or social media strategy.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native cultures and communities; Shareholder and community engagement experience preferred.
  • Direct or indirect supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to travel to attend events, including weekends or evenings.
  • Ability to pass a background screening.
