Koniag Ranger-Visitor Services Position Scope:
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, in collaboration with Koniag, collaboratively employs seasonal Rangers to support the continued facilitation and dissemination of culturally significant information throughout the Kodiak Archipelago. The Kodiak Archipelago is homeland to the Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people who have stewarded the region for thousands of years. The region is rich in geographic, cultural, and historic significance.  Ranger positions are committed to enhancing an accurate awareness of Alutiiq/Sugpiaq cultural information through Refuge and Koniag programs.  This position is part-time, temporary through October 2025.
 
Job Summary:
This position is shared between Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge and Koniag, Inc. Rangers are entrusted with supporting conservation, education, and visitor engagement through
collaborative activities, programs, special events, and outreach activities throughout the Kodiak Archipelago. Rangers embody culture, lands, and stewardship for Refuge lands, highlighting cultural, economic, nutritional, and spiritual sustenance, while simultaneously enhancing awareness for Koniag Shareholders, Descendants, visitors to the Kodiak Archipelago, and community members. 
 
Essential Functions include, but are not limited to:

Culture:
Provides Alutiiq/Sugpiaq interpretation, knowledge, experience, etc. on history, cultural systems, natural resources, etc. throughout the Kodiak Archipelago.
Assists and facilitates a variety of Alutiiq/Sugpiaq interpretive programs, including orientation talks, informal interactions, and demonstrations to a variety of public audiences, including youth and adult learning groups.
Initiates or assists with the development or revision of interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, social media content, interpretive displays, panels, and exhibits, ensuring relevant Alutiiq/Sugpiaq culture, stories, and history is incorporated.

Lands:
Assists with education, outreach, and visitor engagement during rural Native Village visits via plane or boat, for special projects or programs as needed.
Provides information and outreach on Service programs, such as sharing resources linked with State and Federal regulations associated with subsistence harvest and use of resources, State and Federal regulations on sport and commercial fishing and sport hunting.

Stewardship:
Interacts with visitors at the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.
Interacts with Permanent and Seasonal Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Park Rangers and assists with providing interpretive and orientation information to the public.
Communicates effectively and professionally with visitors and staff by writing and through interpretive activities that aid in the missions of the Service and Koniag.
Attends regularly scheduled visitor services staff meetings with Refuge and Koniag supervisors.
Compiles and writes monthly reports to track tasks, events, field work and all aspects of position activities for the month and provides a copy to Koniag supervisor. Photos encouraged.

Additional Duties:
Provide administrative support including annual requests and reporting.
Complete opening and closing procedures associated with the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, including the operation of the retail POS system.
Light cleaning and reorganizing retail and program inventory. May need to lift up to 25lbs.
All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to work and interact effectively with all levels at different organizations.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public, other staff, various agency representatives and partners.
Courteous and tactful customer service.  
Must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines with no decrease in productivity.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent organization skills and detail oriented.
Culturally sensitive and able to relate and interact with all guests, visitors, and Koniag Shareholders.
Must have manual dexterity to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment.
Ability to work independently and use critical thinking skills to solve problems.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
2 years of customer service experience.
Ability to pass Service Bear Awareness & Safety Training
First Aid/CPR/AED certifications
Ability to pass a background investigation, including an MVR.
 
Office Location and Travel:
This position is in Kodiak, AK.
 
Working Environment & Conditions:
This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; answer telephone and serve as receptionist. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
