Position Summary:
The Custodial and Groundskeeping Technician is responsible for the sanitation and cleanliness of AWAIC properties. This includes providing cleaning support to all areas of the administration area, all communal areas of the shelter, and other AWAIC facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., bend, kneel, and climb ladders.
- Possession of a current State of Alaska Driving License and maintenance of a clean driving record.
- Ability to clear and maintain stringent federal, state and local background clearances.
Minimum Experience
- Prior janitorial experience preferred
- Proficient use of computers and standard office equipment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and the ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines is required.
Essential Functions
- Clean and sanitize shelter common areas including bathrooms.
- Clean and sanitize all areas of the administrative area including bathrooms
- Assist with monthly review of facility operations and walk-throughs.
- Development and implement deep cleaning and seasonal cleaning and grounds schedules for all AWAIC facilities.
- Empty trash and recycling bins and dispose of waste appropriately.
- Assist in set-up and clean-up for events and meetings as needed, including removing trash, setting up tables and chairs, etc.
- Inventory and replenish janitorial supplies and disposable products (toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, etc.)
- Water outdoor plants, flowers, and garden areas as required.
- Maintain outdoor refuse area in a clean and safe manner.
- Perform dump and recycle runs as needed.
- Ensure pathways, parking lots, and exterior areas are free of hazards and litter.
- Assist with basic winter maintenance, including salting walkways and performing light snow shoveling to ensure exits and walkways are accessible until contractor arrives for full snow clearing.
- Other grounds care as assigned.
- Coordination of schedules and scopes of work with outside vendors/contractors as assigned.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures in accordance with OSHA regulations.
- Maintain and adhere to OSHA standards for cleaning chemicals, equipment, and grounds maintenance tools.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials (e.g., cleaning chemicals, oils, etc.).
- Keep OSHA safety documentation for reference and ensure compliance with company safety policies regarding duty related chemicals and actions.
- Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
- Noise level is typically mild to moderate, consistent with office and residential environments, brief exposure periods to higher noise levels consistent with operating equipment.
- Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
- Must be able to move within the office to access files and office equipment.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairways, possibly without the assistance of an elevator
- Occasionally moves items up to 50 pounds, including while ascending/descending stairways.
- Exposure to topics related to domestic violence, other types of abuse, substance use, and other emotionally sensitive situations and subjects.
